The Military is always looking for better ways to help their staff integrate with their systems and programs more efficiently. One of the most useful applications available to soldiers and staff is the Enterprise E-Mail Outlook Web Access which allows access from any machine in the world, as long as it has an internet connection and has a CAC Reader, for reading your unique code.
You also need to download the Active Client software, which can be found here. A CAC Reader is much like a card reader, except it will read your unique code from your Common Access Card. If you intend on using this service on any machine which has not been updated via the Government Furnished Equipment scheme, then you will have to make some changes.
Installing your CAC Reader
There are three different parts to the installation process, and you need to do them all to make sure your CAC Reader is working properly. First off, you have to install ActivClient 6, and then you have to install the device information known as the drivers for your specific CAC Reader. Make sure you leave your CAC Reader unplugged until all of the software is installed properly, and your machine is powered down.

Step One – Download ActivClient 6
- You can download Activclient here. Once downloaded, load the installer, which will be an .msi file.
- Make sure you have selected the ‘Typical’ installation feature, and click ‘Next’
- Once installed, restart your machine
Step Two – Install your CAC Reader Drivers
- If you have purchased your own CAC Reader, then you will have a disk or a flash drive with the drivers on there. If not, check the manufacturer’s website, they should be available online.
- If you have been given an SCMSCR 331 CAC Reader, and your machine is not Windows XP, then you will need to install the drivers. Download the drivers from the website, they should come in a .zip format.
- Once downloaded, open the .zip file and extract the files into a separate folder.
- Once extracted, run the Setup.exe file
- Accept all of the default settings and read the license agreement. Accept when finished.
- Input customer details, it does not really matter.
- Reboot your machine.
Step Three – Using Your CAC Reader
- Once you have turned your machine on, plug your CAC Reader into your USB port. If installed correctly, it will recognise your drivers.
- This should then work perfectly fine and be installed properly. If you wish to use your CAC Reader with your web browser, check online for the details – they usually come with a plug-in but each browser is different.
Installing your CAC Reader gives you the ability to check your e-mails from any location, so long as you have this on you. The entire process does not take too long and if you install the correct drivers then you should be up and running in no time.
