AKO Mail Client: Thunderbird Configuration

To configure Thunderbird with your AKO mail:

1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird and go to Tools –> Account Settings.

2. Click the ‘Account Actions’ button then ‘Add Mail Account’ and enter the following:

  • Your Name
  • AKO email address
  • AKO password (Optional)

NOTE: If you save your password, you should uncheck the Save password option for security and you will need to update it within Thunderbird any time you change your AKO password.

3. Click ‘Continue’ and Thunderbird will attempt to auto-detect the server settings.

4. Set the incoming and outgoing servers (review EXTERNAL CLIENT CONFIGURATION for AKO manual server and port settings).

5. Select SSL/TLS and Normal Password.

6. Click Done.

To set up Thunderbird with your AKO Directory, review THUNDERBIRD GAL INTEGRATION.

Follow the directions below to configure your AKO mail to work with Thunderbird 2.0 on your local machine.

1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird

2. Click on ‘Tools’.

3. Select ‘Account Settings…’

4. Click on ‘Add Account’.

5. Select “Email Account”.

6. Click on ‘Next’.

7. Enter your name, and then your full AKO email address in the appropriate fields.

8. Click on ‘Next’.

9. Select “IMAP”.

10. Enter imap.us.army.mil within the “Incoming Server:” field.

11. Enter your AKO/DKO username in the “Incoming User Name:” field.

12. Enter your account name; this is how Thunderbird will list the account.

13. Click on ‘Next’.

14. Click on ‘Finish’.

15. In the “Account Settings” window, select where it reads ‘Server settings’ underneath the account you just created.

16. Enter 993 in to the port field.

17. Select SSL from the list under the “Security Settings” section.

18. Ensure that the “Use secure authentication” box is not checked.

19. Click on ‘Outgoing Server (SMTP)’ located on the left side.

20. Click on the ‘Add’ button.

21. Enter “AKO/DKO” or another description for the AKO/DKO within the “Description” field.

22. Enter mailrouter.us.army.mil for the “Server Name:”.

23. Select “SSL” with the “Security and Authentication” section.

24. If it did not change automatically, change the port number to 465.

25. Enter your AKO/DKO username within the “User Name:” field.

27. Ensure “Use name and password” is checked.

28. Click ‘Ok’.

Setting up your AKO webmail with Thunderbird will allow you to view and use your AKO webmail from your local machine.
