How do I register for a DKO account?
Eligibility
If you are a service member with any of the following statuses you are entitled to an account on AKO/DKO. Your ability to sponsor other users for an account on AKO/DKO is based on your status with the military. The chart below is a list of all the non-Army accounts on AKO/DKO and if they require sponsorship.

Currently only Army and Department of the Army Retirees maintain their unsponsored account access. If you retire from a service branch other than the Army or as a civilian other than Department of the Army you will need to obtain a sponsor for continued access.
Dual Status / Multiple Accounts
Some of our users have more than one qualifying status. This is typically for people who have retired from service but maintain a civilian/contractor job or part time service members as well as a civilian/contractor status. For those users who do have this dual status AKO/DKO can reflect these without requiring more than one account to ensure your single account can have all the access it requires.
If you already have an account and acquire a second valid status at a later date your account can be updated to reflect this second status. If your status adds or changes your status then your AKO/DKO account will automatically update to reflect the correct status as your information is updated in the appropriate authoritative personnel database. If your status changes fully from an unsponsored account type to a sponsored one (such as Active Duty Navy leaving the service and coming back as a Contractor) you will need to call the help desk to change your account type.

Required Information
CAC
Unsponsored accounts on AKO/DKO require certain verification by matching information about you with our authoritative databases. One of our primary ways of verifying identity is available to us only for Army personnel. Due to this piece of information being unavailable to us AKO/DKO requires you to register for your account with a CAC.
SSN / FIN
Your SSN is required to register for a full account if you have one. If you have a Foreign Identifier Number then you will need to enter this as well.
Date of Birth
Your date of birth is required to validate your identity.
External Email Address
Your external email address is what AKO/DKO uses to contact you outside of the portal. This might be to assist you with accessing your account if you lose your credentials or to send you newsletters or other important information. You may elect to not fill an external email address in this field but if you do not it will be more difficult for you to get help with your account as you are then required to call the service desk if you need assistance.
Password
AKO’s password complexity requirements.
Contact Information
The only required field here is your phone number. This should be your work or desk number and not a personal one as it will be displayed in your profile. You should also enter the information for your unit or organization (unit information is typically for soldiers and organizational information is typically for civilians) so that people will be able to locate and identify you easier in people searches.
Security Questions
Your security questions are an additional layer of security and may be used by the portal or help desk to validate your identity.
Accounts other than a Full AKO account
There are two broad types of accounts on the Army Knowledge Online; guest accounts and full accounts (which may be referred to as sponsored or unsponsored accounts respectively). Guest accounts are more restricted than full accounts but still allow access to important information and communications abilities. To learn more about Unconsidered Army Account Registration.
